If a visitor visits your site through one of your affilite's referral urls, then a "cookie" to be written on their computer. This cookie is set to last for 90 days.
You should make a link on your site so that new affiliates can sign up to your program. You do this by making a link to http://www.yourdomain.com/store/register.asp. This page checks who referred them.
If that visitor signs up as an affiliate the cookie is set to 99 years and the referring affiliate is permanently recorded in the database along with the new affiliate details. The program uses this record when processing a sale. If the product being purchased pays a multi-level commission, then it checks whether there is a referring affiliate at each level that should be credited with this commission.

If you want to test your affiliate program using your own computer you will have to clear the cookies each time you want to join as a "new" affiliate.
